Amount required approx. (tassels not included): size 12/18m: 209 yds (2 skeins); size 1/2: 277 yds (3 skeins); size 3/4: 353 yds (skeins); size 5/6: 530 yds (4 skeins); size 7/10: 698 yds (6 skeins); size XS/M: 851 yds (7 skeins); size L/XL: 1018 yds (8 skeins).

Gauge: (in 4″ x 4″/10cm x 10cm)

24 sts x 32 rows in stockinette st. (US 5 knitting needle)

co = cast on
k = knit
kfb = knit 1 in the front and back
m1l = make 1 knit stitch left
m1r = make 1 knit stitch right
p = purl
rep =repeat

skp = slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over

  • Sizing in pattern will be listed as 12/18m (1/2, 3/4, 5/6, 7/10) XS/M, L/XL. When only one number is given, it applied to all sizes. You may circle all numbers pertaining to your size before beginning.

With 3.75 mm (US 5) knitting needle, co 105 (113, 121, 129, 137) 145, 153 sts, continue work in rounds. Place a marker to mark the beginning of round.

Rolled neckline:

Round 1: K around.
Rep round 1: 7 more times.

Round 2 and following even rounds: K the knits, P the purls.

I’m using triple I-cord selvedge for this part.

Row 2 (WS): Sl 1 wyib, K 1, sl 1 wyif; work in any given stitch pattern to last 3 sts; sl 1 wyif, K 1, P 1.)

Row 1 (RS): sl 1 wyib, sl 1 wyif, K 1, *P 1, K 1, rep from * to 4 sts before m, P 1, K 1, sl 1 wyif, P 1.
(Turn and start working in rows. Remove marker as you get to it.)
Row 2: sl 1 wyib, K 1, sl 1 wyif, * K 1, P 1, rep from * to last 4 sts, K 1, sl 1 wyif, K 1, P 1.
Row 3: sl 1 wyib, sl 1 wyif, K 1, *K 3, P 1, rep from * to last 6 sts, K 3, K 1, sl 1 wyif, P 1.

Rep row 1 – row 8: 2 (3, 4, 8, 11), 12, 15 more times.
Measure from row 1 of bottom of poncho approx.: 2.5 (3.5, 4.5, 8, 10.75) 12.5, 14.5 inches. Or to your desired length.

Bottom Edge

I-cord bind off.

Cast on 3 stitches (cable cast on method), *knit 2 stitches, skp, now you have 3 stitches on your right hand needle, slip these 3 stitches back to left hand needle (as if to purl), rep from * all across until you have only 3 stitches left on the left hand needle. Knit them all together. Break yarn and pull it through the remaining loop.

Tassel:

Make 2: Cut a winding board from heavy cardboard about 2.5 in/7 cm length. Wind yarn around board 30 times. Slide the yarn loops off cardboard. Center it on 8 in/20 cm yarn, and tie a tight knot around. Pull ends of yarn upward. Cut through looped ends, and adjust into tassel shape. Tie crosswise around each tassel about 1 in/2.5 cm below top of fold with 8 in /20cm lengths yarn.

Attach the tassels onto the corner of bottom of poncho.

Finishing

Weave in all ends.  Decorate the hat with a pom-pom.
Gently blocking to approx. finished measurements.
